One of my goals for 2020 is to post more recipes and to share a bit more about what we eat as a busy family of five. I am definitely not a master baker but I have yet to find a sugar cookie recipe that is easier or more delicious than my mom’s! And it is so much fun to involve your kiddos in the decorating process (and messy, FYI).
Whether you’re making Valentine’s Day heart cookies, cookies for Santa Claus or cutting out shapes for a birthday party; I promise you can’t go wrong with this recipe!
- Mixing bowl
- Wooden spoon
- Cookie sheets
- Rolling pin
- Cookie cutters (I grabbed these heart-shaped ones at Target)
- Assorted sprinkles
- Plastic knives
- 3 sticks salted butter
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 4 1/2 c. flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- White frosting
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Cream together butter and sugar using electric mixer.
- Add eggs and vanilla extract and mix until well blended.
- Mix together remaining dry ingredients in a separate mixing bowl (flour, salt, baking powder).
- Slowly mix in dry ingredients with the butter mixture adding about one cup at a time until a dough has formed.
- Refrigerate dough for at least one hour.
- Roll out dough to desired thickness using a rolling pin. I usually roll mine out to about one 1/4-1/2 inch thick. Be sure to sprinkle your surface with flour as well as your rolling pin to help keep the dough from sticking.
- Cut out shapes using your cookie cutters and Place on cookie sheet. Leave about 1/2 inch space between the cookies.
- Bake in oven for approximately 8 to 10 minutes or until desired doneness.
- Allow cookies to cool completely.
- While your cookies are cooling prepare your decorating items.
- Mix food coloring with white frosting in separate cups to make your desired colors. In this instance I created pink and purple frosting and left some white.
- Grab your kids and let them go to town frosting the cookies and decorating with sprinkles!
