Patriotic Stars & Bows Garland

It’s been a minute since I’ve DIY’ed garland for my mantel. I’m ready to move away from all of my yarn pompoms and toward something a bit different – bows. Bows are very on trend and the patriotic ribbon selection at Hobby Lobby did not disappoint. As soon as I saw this red and blue gingham ribbon I new I had to have it. I tied it into the American flag with blue star ribbon and some painted wooden stars.

This garland was pretty easy to make, and I got to use my drill which always makes me feel cool. Follow the instructions below to make this yourself!

Supplies

  • Patriotic Ribbon
  • Wooden stars
  • Blue and white (or red, or all three) acrylic paint
  • Twine/string
  • Paint brushes
  • Drill & bits
  • Scissors

Instructions

Start by painting the wooden stars. I did two coats on each side.

Once dry, use your drill and an appropriate sized bit (make sure it is large enough for stringing using your twine/string) to drill a hole in one of the points of each star.

Next, add one star to your string/twine.

Cut a piece of ribbon and tie it in a bow on the string a couple inches from the star.

Repeat this process with remaining stars while interchanging the color and the bow color until the garland is as long as you would like it.

Cut the other end of the string and adjust the spacing between the stars and bows.

Hang the garland on your mantel using hooks or Command straps. I hung mine along with some bomb pop garland I made out of toilet paper rolls a few years ago.

It is the perfect combo of patriotic and whimsy!
