Looking for a cheap and easy way to elevated your party decor?! Well you have come to the right place. My birthday party bestie is this colorful fringe backdrop.
It is super cheap and simple to make. You can make the backdrop all one color or any color combo you want to match your party theme. For Hank’s recent Star Wars party, I made a black/green/purple/blue backdrop.
I ended up making 10 “layers” for this party and hung them at the cake table, photo backdrop, behind the kitchen table and on the mantle. They really help pull the theme together. And that’s not even the best part – you can store them and reuse them for another party with similar/matching colors. I have way too many of these in boxes in my attic. 😅
Since I already had string I just needed to buy the table cloths. I purchased 5 of each color and any you have leftover just put on tables during the party or save for the next back drop!
Here are all the details to make your own backdrop.
Supplies
- Rectangular plastic table cloths
- String
- Scissors
- Command hooks
Instructions
Unfold the table cloth partially. The length but not the width.

Cut straight across at the fold to creat long strips. Cut approximately 20 strips of each color.

Unwind about 5-6 feet of string. Tie the ends to something to keep it tight. Like the backs of two chairs.
Next, open a strip of table cloth all the way and then fold it in half once. Hold the strip at about the middle and then spread apart at the fold to create a loop.

Place the loop behind the string and then pinch the cloth cloth from the other side of the string and pull it through.

This is very hard to explain so I really hope the photos help.

Repeat this step for each of the 20 strands of each color. Repeat the color pattern until it is the length you like.

Then, create a few more lengths of fringe but use a slightly different color pattern.
When you are done, hang them using command hooks, nails, tape, etc. hang a couple rows on top of each other to fill more space.

For this most recent party, I used the fringe for a photo-op backdrop, behind our dessert table, on a window with a #6 balloon and on our mantel. I just love how it makes everything so much more festive!
